CAPE NORTH 43 CENTER COCKPIT CUTTER RIGGED SLOOP

Throughout the boat but particularly below decks, the craftsmanship is more indicative of a custom built yacht and very expensive to recreate, today.  The interior is finished in a polished honey brown teak that is expertly fitted.  The full headroom main cabin is spacious and well appointed offering comfortable seating for six at the table.  The cabinets have teak framed woven cane doors. With windows and operating ports plus an overhead hatch the open cabin design allows ample light and ventilation throughout.

Aft of the main cabin is an efficient galley centered on a two burner stove.  The galley is fully outfitted to accommodate every day demands and almost any entertainment need.  There is an 12v refrigerator.

Silmarillion is ideal for two couples with separate cabins and heads fore and aft. She does have berth space for another four persons in the main cabin but one can hardly call eight people on a 43′ sailboat practical or comfortable.

The Eastern Aegean weather permits most of the relaxation and entertaining to be done in the large center cockpit.  There is room for four prone people around the perimeter seating.  The completely covered cockpit allows sun protection while still enjoying free access to the deck and viewing the surroundings.  The visibility through the large windowed dodger is excellent.  The stern deck area is equipt with a confortable bench, perfect for watching the incredible Aegean sunsets.

For propulsion, Silmarillion has a perkins with a Borg Warner Velvet Drive transmission.  Both are original to the vessel and both are well known and reliable. With this arrangement she can easily achieve her hull speed of just under eight knots, and at a cruising speed of six knots she consumes about five liters of diesel fuel/hour.

Silmarillion is a Cape North 43 center cockpit cutter rig sloop, an adaptation of noted American naval architect Ted Brewer’s successful Black Velvet design.  She has a 3/4 keel with the ‘Brewer Bite’ cutout, one of Brewer’s signature design features.  It was a clever way of adding some of the windward sailing advantage of a fin keel boat to a cruising boat’s full keel. At the same time, the “Brewer Bite” offers protection for the prop — an important feature for a cruising boat — just as you would see in a full keel design. (see more hull detail in History).  With this design he has created a very comfortable and dry sailing hull.  Brewer’s website provides great detail on his designs, design philosophy and good background for anyone interested in learning more about this type of boat and boat design, in general.  (The layout above is taken from the original sales brochure and is mostly accurate but there are small modifications to the arrangement of storage lockers.)
